The Myth of multiple passes
It has become common misconception over the years that a 2-pass is better than a 1, and a 3 even better than a 2. Without diving into the specifics of the particular application, this statement in general is completely false. In terms of cooling mass and efficiency, like size and quality, generally speaking single pass can be the better performer.
This is because the majority of the heat exchange happens in the first 5-10″ of the pass. Reasons to have a multiple pass is simple – packaging. The intercooler under the blower is a perfect example of this. Packaging dictates that running an outlet out of the back would of brought up a number of engineering and packaging nightmares, so in this application it was best to make the core a dual pass.
The heat exchanger up front though is not under these constraints, so why do we see so many mulit-pass units available? You’re told its because the water needs to sit in the core longer to shed more heat, which couldn’t be further from the truth as to how your heat exchanger works. The truth lies somewhere in where these companies are sourcing their core, having predetermined sizes to work with, packaging, or just not understanding what they are selling.
Multi-pass heat exchangers are not necessarily bad, however, they are not typically better than a well designed single pass.
